What’s the one ritual you practice/follow every day?
I start every morning by drinking a big glass of water as soon as I wake up, and I always have the same breakfast. Iced coffee, eggs, and potatoes.
What ritual brings you the most happiness?
I prefer iced coffee to hot coffee, and I make it the day before and put it in a glass jar in my fridge so I can drink it first thing in the morning. Making it a day in advance makes me feel like I have my shit together and I’m organized.
Do you use rituals to help you achieve your goals?
I wouldn’t say I have a lot of specific rituals, but I would say I’m a creature of habit and have a consistent daily routine. Success comes from doing what needs to be done each day regardless of how you feel and having a routine definitely helps to stay on track on days when I don’t feel motivated.
What was a big setback in your life? What did you do to come back from it?
I had a back surgery when I was 19 years old that forced me to leave school for two years. I was not a trainer at the time, but going through the rehab process got me interested in training, which ultimately led me to get into doing what I do now.
Do you have any meal-time rituals?
Not really. I usually eat pretty much the same thing every day for breakfast and lunch because I eat quickly between clients. Dinner is a wild card because I go out to eat a lot and like to try new places.
What advice would you give to anyone that feels unable to reach the next level of success?
Rather than focus on reaching the next level, I try to focus on doing the absolute best job I can at the level I’m at with the job in front of me. Consistently doing a good job and going above the call of duty is how you level up. What separates good from great isn’t usually anything crazy, but rather doing the little things just a little better, and doing it consistently for years.
Who has inspired or influenced any of your rituals?
Most of my successful trainer friends and I only interact very very early in the morning. Success leaves clues, so there seems to be something to the idea of getting up early.
What’s your favorite quote of all-time?
“The playground is only as good as the kids on it”- My mom.
